CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH FINDING AND DISCUSSION
A.
Description
of the data
The research
description below is based on the scores from the test to know the students’
vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension skill. It is presented in
the form of score, variance, mean, median, mode, standard deviation, the highest
and lowest score that is completed with the variable description in the form of
histograms. The data obtained namely: The Correlation Between Students
vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Skill can be explained as follow :
The data of students vocabulary mastery were obtained from a test.
The data was taken from 25 students as the sample of the research. The
students’ vocabulary mastery is gotten from the score of the test and the
frequency distribution is presented in the form of table and it is included
with the histogram as follow :

From the data above, the highest score of the test is 70, and the
lowest score is 30, therefore the range is 40. Then from the computation of the
data of students' vocabulary mastery, it is acquired :
1)
Mean
Mean
is the average value of a data group. It is gained from summing up the
individual data of the group and dividing it by the total of the individuals: (
Djiwandono,2007:212)
Mean : ∑x
n
: 1180
25
: 47,2
Where : ∑x :
Summing up the data of group
n :
The total of individuals
After being computed,
it can be seen the mean of the data is 47,2.
2)
Median
Median
is the scores which are arranged based on the amount, which is in the middle
between the lowest and the highest scores ( Djiwandono, 2007: 212 ). Then to
find the median, the researcher has to arrange the scores of the respondents
from the lowest up to the highest as below : 30, 30, 30,35,40, 40,40,40,40
45,45,45,45,45,50,50,50, 55,55,55,60,60,60,65,70
The
median is : 45.
3)
Mode
According
to Brown ( 1996:104 ) states that Mode is that score which occurs most
frequently. Therefore from the score above, the mode is 45.
4)
Standard
deviation
Standard
deviation is the distance of an individuals value from the mean. The formula
according to James Dean Brown (1996:107) :
The
standard deviation formula is :
= 10.90489187
Where : ∑x : The summing up from the score
‾x :
The mean of the score
n :
The sum of respondents

data of students’ reading comprehension, it is acquired :
1)
Mean
Mean
is the average value of a data group. It is gained from summing up the
individual data of the group and dividing it by the total of the individuals: (
Djiwandono,2007:212)

After being computed,
it can be seen the mean of the data is 59,6
2) Median
Median
is the scores which are arranged based on the amount, which is in the middle
between the lowest and the highest scores ( Djiwandono, 2007: 212 ). Then to
find the median, the researcher has to arrange the scores of the respondents
from the lowest up to the highest as below :
23,37,47,47,47,47,53,57,60,60,60,63,63,63,63,67,67,67,67,70,70,73,73,73,73. Therefore the median is : 63.
3)
Mode
According
to Brown ( 1996:104 ) states that Mode is that score which occurs most
frequently. Therefore , from the score above the mode is 63.
4)
Standard

Standard deviation
is the distance of an individuals value from the mean. The formula according to
James Dean Brown (1996:107) :
The
standard deviation formula is :

DISCUSSION
A. The Discussion of the Research
The researcher get the result of
the computation after analyzing of all of the data. The result of the students’
Vocabulary mastery test shows that the
highest score is 70 and the lowest score is 30. So the range is 40. The mean of
the total score is 47,2. The median is
45, the mode is 45 and the standard deviation is 10.90489187.
The result of reading comprehension test shows that the
highest score is 73 and the lowest score is 23. So the range is 50. The mean of
the total score is 59,6. The median is 63,
the mode is 63 and the standard deviation is 12,47664485.
Based on the computation result of hypothesis testing, it shows
that there is a positive significant correlation between students’ vocabulary
mastery and reading comprehension.
